• July 2009 Blind cycling champion leads UI's Project 3000 RAGBRAI Team across Iowa
  A team of a dozen cyclists -- including a blind U.S. Paralympics track cycling national champion -- pedaled 442 miles across Iowa as part of RAGBRAI to raise awareness of and funds for Project 3000. A portion of the proceeds from a new video about the history of the Chicago Cubs will be donated to Project 3000, a philanthropically supported effort at the University of Iowa to find all 3,000 people in the U.S. affected with the blinding eye disease Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA).

  A few short months ago, Alyssa Perez and her father, Robert, knew nothing about the cutting-edge research being done to find a cure for a rare inherited eye disease known as Leber congenital amaurosis, or LCA. The disease strikes during infancy or early childhood causing severe vision loss or blindness. Alyssa had the opportunity to visit the University of Iowa after learning about Project 3000, a UI-based initiative that seeks to find the causes of and treatments for LCA. www.project3000.org

• 03.13.2008 - Chicago Cubs' Derrek Lee teams up with the UI Carver Family Center for Macular Degeneration for a fundraising event benefiting Project 3000.   Over 100 guests joined Chicago Cubs all-star Derrek Lee in Scottsdale, Arizona for a special evening of hope, education and inspiration. Lee joined Dr. Edwin Stone from the University of Iowa Carver Nonprofit Genetic Testing Laboratory for a fundraising event that raised $140,000 toward genetic testing and research for cures to Leber congenital amaurosis, or LCA, and other blinding eye diseases. The evening featured a silent auction that included unique and exciting items like professional sports memorabilia, custom jewelry and vacation and resort packages. Special guests included the Perez family of Arizona, whose daughter has LCA.
